WorldTeach: An Extraordinary Journey
The documentary WorldTeach: An Extraordinary Journey was made by Tim Hawthorne and Laya Schaetzel Hawthorne as a generous donation to WorldTeach in 2001. Tim, who owns the advertising and production company, Hawthorne Direct, spent a year as a volunteer teacher in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in 1970-71 under the auspices of the Harvard Africa Volunteer Project (HAVP), the precursor organization to WorldTeach.
As loyal WorldTeach supporters, Tim and his wife Laya offered to make a film for WorldTeach in 2000, and subsequently spent nearly seven weeks traveling around the world to WorldTeach placement sites in Costa Rica, Ecuador, Namibia, and China. They interviewed and filmed volunteers, students, educational leaders, host families and members of the local community about the WorldTeach experience, and ultimately created a film that won the International Film and Video Festival Silver Screen Award for Documentary Film in 2002.
WorldTeach: An Extraordinary Journey provides an excellent overview of WorldTeach year-long programs, and we encourage all prospective applicants to watch the full-length DVD. The version available here is a condensed 15-minute Quicktime video which we hope you will enjoy.
Summer in Costa Rica
During the summer of 2001, Terry Frosini of Frosini Video Productions in Henderson, Nevada, made a short documentary about the WorldTeach Costa Rica Summer program. Mr. Frosini offered to produce this documentary about our program pro bono because of his respect for the WorldTeach program. He interviewed and filmed volunteers, educators, host families and the Field Director, and shot footage of the villages and countryside where the volunteers live and work. The video gives a good sense of what it is like for a volunteer to participate in the Costa Rica Summer program. This video is available only in VHS format, and can be mailed to you upon request.
