Special Projects

Many of our volunteers find that their teaching schedules and highly-respected standing in local communities allow them to commit themselves to undertakings far beyond the classroom.  We encourage you, in consultation with WorldTeach guidelines for community projects, to seek and create these opportunities, which often lead to a deeper cross-cultural experience.

Below are several projects developed by WorldTeach volunteers around the globe.  Feel free to use their stories as your inspiration, or transform your own passion into a special project!

Arts & Music

Bekah Larsen, Chile Year volunteer
Bekah organized an English Music Fest for her high school in Antofagasta, Chile . Students participated in teams, performing their favorite music in English ranging from heavy metal to 80s pop.

Rebecca Griffith, Ecuador Year volunteer
Because music and dancing is such a big part of the Kichwa culture, Rebecca and her friend Ramiro formed a small Kichwa folklore group. They sang in Kichwa with the children of Jatun Yaku, a small indigenous village about 45 minutes outside of Tena. Her group also performed at various cultural events, competitions, birthday parties and baptisms, with the goal of engaging the children in their culture and reminding them that it is something to be proud of.

Erin Wafer, Costa Rica Year volunteer
After receiving a care package from a friend that included some basic tools for cross-stitching, Erin first asked her host mother for some help in learning.  She then went several steps further, asking the president of the local development association for the keys to the community room so that she could establish an all-women's craft group that gathers every Saturday afternoon.  The women in the craft group share in a common interest and invest in creative and emotionally supportive time set aside solely for them, away if but for one afternoon a week from the responsibilities of constantly cooking and cleaning for their families.

Cate Batchelder, Danish Iqbal, Meghan Goldstein, Ecuador Year volunteers
A number of WorldTeach volunteers have donated their time to Kallari, a non-profit foundation that works with associations of indigenous groups from the eastern El Oriente region of Ecuador to produce traditional crafts and chocolates for sale in the United States and Europe.  Through such efforts, the indigenous peoples are able to sustain traditions of artisanship in an increasingly globalized context.
