Program Profile
We are excited to announce Tanzania Semester
as one of our newest programs! In January 2012, our first group of volunteers departed for a tiny island off the coast of Tanzania called Mafia Island. For our second year in 2013, we expect this program to expand to other coastal Tanzanian regions. Thanks to generous funding from the Quadra Foundation, and the support of the local districts, it is possible to reach the students of these gorgeous regions.
Volunteer Role
Each WorldTeach volunteer will be partnered with a recent graduate from a Tanzanian Teachers' College to co-teach in the same classroom. The WorldTeach and Tanzanian volunteers will have the same role- to work together with two local teachers from the district to teach 5 hours per day, 5 days a week. Lesson planning and preparation, teaching in the classroom and student assessment will be equally shared between these four participating teachers.
Teaching styles used in this special and innovative ELT Project will incorporate not only traditional methods- like using the blackboard for introducing new material, and assigning group work to allow the students to practice using it - but will also use computers for interactive and engaging lessons. Classrooms will be equipped with overhead projectors, which will allow students to see the computer screen on a large scale. Further, exciting technology will assist the students to interact with the computer software. The students will be given many opportunities to practice English vocabulary, grammar and structure by using it, on their own, with fellow classmates and through innovative student-centered activities.
During the Orientation prior to the start of classroom teaching, each participating teacher- from WorldTeach, the Tanzanian graduates, as well as the local teachers - will be trained on components of the English curriculum. They will have lessons on general teacher training as well as three days of training devoted specifically for getting familiar with the computer programs and software that will be used in the project. Each participating teacher will be very well prepared for his/her experience in the classroom.
Because of the length of this program, TEFL Certification will not be awarded.
Placements & Housing
Volunteers will live in school-provided houses. Each volunteer will have his or her own room, but may share the common space with another volunteer and possibly a Tanzanian teacher as well. Electricity is scarce all over Mafia Island with generators being the most common form of power. Solar power is also available to charge cell phones and run laptops.
Financial Information
Subsidized by the Quadra Foundation, the cost of this program is $3,990. This covers pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare from a US departure city to Dar Es Salaam, transportation to your district site, overseas medical and emergency evacuation insurance, 2-week long in-country orientation as well as an end-of-service conference, 24-hour field staff support, housing and meals, and alumni support.
Many volunteers are able to successfully fundraise all or a significant portion of their volunteer commitment. Please refer to our fundraising webpage for more information about fundraising possibilities.
