Insight From Her Students

Months after her service has ended, Ecuador Summer Volunteer, Anika Manzoor can still clearly remember her fondest memories of teaching and learning from her students in Quito.

"Although I had many great experiences living in Quito and traveling in Ecuador, my best memories, by far, involve my students. I taught two advanced-level English classes to young adults and professionals, so it was a very rewarding opportunity for me to engage in real and meaningful dialogue with students who are still learning the language. Through my interactions with students, I learned a lot of very honest information and diverse opinions regarding the culture and politics in Ecuador and got the pleasure of hearing them talk about their dreams and aspirations, which often included the mastery of English, whether it be for a mid-career change to English teaching or a future in International Relations. I especially loved class when there was a true sense of cultural exchange going on. One of my absolute favorite moments was toward the end of the 7-week session, when we just sat around in my morning class and exchanged idioms and proverbs in both English and Spanish and we just laughed and laughed about similarities, differences and the general ridiculousness of these expressions. For my first time teaching, I was incredibly lucky to have such a group of passionate and dedicated students in my classrooms, and my time with them left no question in my mind about pursuing a career in service abroad."
