Program Profile

We are excited to announce Tanzania as one of our newest programs! In 2010, our first group of volunteers began teaching at secondary schools in the eastern part of the country. For our second year, WorldTeach, in cooperation with the Tanzanian Ministry of Education, has expanded to schools in new regions. Come with us as our program grows and we discover more of Tanzania!

Volunteer Role

WorldTeach volunteers work as English, Mathematics and Science teachers in a wide range of Secondary Schools throughout the country. Volunteers will teach at the O-Level, Form 1 through Form 4. It is possible that some more advanced A-Level courses will be taught as well. Like local teachers, WorldTeach volunteers will teach approximately 20 classes per week for 45 minutes each class.

Volunteers will engage in other secondary projects, such as teaching extra English classes, coaching sports, starting art clubs, or developing the school library or computer room. Volunteers have a prime opportunity to contribute their skills and interests to the broader needs of their school and community.

The first semester runs from the middle of July until December. After a 4-week break between the semesters, classes resume for the second semester in January and end in June. There are 2-week breaks in both September and March. These school vacations are a perfect time to go on safari in the Serengeti, attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, or sample the spices on Zanzibar!

***Due to the 2012 Tanzanian census, the program will begin in mid-August this year.  School will start in September, after you complete the three-week Orientation.

Please note that only volunteers assigned to teach English as a Second or Foreign Language in Tanzania will be eligible for WorldTeach TEFL certification. For all departures leaving on or after July 1, 2012, an additional $50 is required by volunteers to participate in the TEFL Certification program.

Placements & Housing

Placements will generally be in pairs with one other WorldTeach volunteer at your school. Additionally, there may be other WorldTeach volunteers in the town or region, though some placements are very secluded. Volunteers will live in school-provided housing and will have their own furnished room, although they might share common rooms with other teachers or staff.

Financial Information

The cost of the year-long program is $5,990. This covers pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare from a US departure city to Dar Es Salaam, overseas medical and emergency evacuation insurance, 3-week long in-country orientation as well as a mid-service and end-of-service conference, 24-hour field staff support, housing and a living stipend, and alumni support. Volunteers receive a stipend of approximately $200 each month from the Ministry of Education. This stipend is intended to help volunteers meet basic daily living expenses at the local standard of living.

Many volunteers are able to successfully fundraise all or a significant portion of their volunteer commitment. Please refer to our fundraising webpage for more information about fundraising possibilities.
