PLEASE FIND HERE A LETTER FROM THE THAILAND FIELD DIRECTOR ABOUT THE PROTESTS IN BANGKOK EARLIER THIS YEAR AND THEIR EFFECT ON NAKHON PHANOM.
Starting its second year in October 2010, WorldTeach will send a group of volunteers for the exciting year-long program to teach in public elementary and high schools in the Nakhon Phanom Province in Northeastern Thailand. Nakhon Phanom lies along the Mekong river on the border of Laos, in the far northeastern part of Thailand known as Isan.
This province is beautiful and relatively untouched by the outside world compared to the rest of Thailand. In the more rural villages, many people have never even seen a Westerner.
Volunteers will teach English at schools in rural areas throughout the province. Volunteers will teach in English though the national language is Thai, and the local language is Isan, the language of eastern Thailand, which is a mix of Lao and Thai.
In order to participate in the year long program, volunteers must be native English speakers and hold a bachelor's degree. Additionally, volunteers must be between the ages of 18 and 74 by the departure date as well as demonstrate flexibility maturity and a desire to teach and live in an under-developed nation.
The students you will be teaching are among the most underprivileged in the country, and the impact your presence as a volunteer teacher will have on them will undoubtedly be life-changing, as will their impact on you.
Volunteers should also plan on running a variety of extra-curricular activities for the students, such as English camps, clubs, and other activities to interact with the students outside of school. It is anticipated that many of the volunteers will want to work with these clubs and truly benefit the youth they are aimed to help. Volunteers will also be in a unique position to assist Thai English teachers in the area to find English resources that are suitable and up-to-date for their students, thus creating a more self-sustaining teaching environment.
Volunteers depart in October for a month of in-country orientation and training before beginning their volunteering assignment, which begins in November. Volunteers will live in school-provided housing, which will vary in facilities depending on the placement site. The volunteer's service will end in September of 2011.
Volunteers will receive a stipend of approximately US$150 per month from the Thai schools, which will cover the cost of basic living expenses. Food will be provided by the schools and/or host families.
The program fee is US$4,990. This fee includes: Round-Trip Airfare, Health Insurance, In-Country Orientation, Transportation to your site, Meals and Housing during your stay, and 24-hour Field Support.
