Welcome to South Africa!

Because of the 2010 World Cup this summer, the South Africa Program may differ from the description below and from programs from previous years.  As more information becomes available, we will update our website.

Volunteers in the WorldTeach South Africa Summer program will have the opportunity to work in a variety of capacities.

We run various courses for children and adults in the township of Masiphumelele during the July holidays. These include Computers, English literacy, Math and special programs that vary from year to year.

Volunteers will spend the remaining five weeks of the program working as teaching assistants in elementary and secondary schools in the South Peninsula of Cape Town.

The program departs in mid/late June and runs for two months.

Volunteers must be between the ages of 18 and 74 years old (undergraduate students are welcome) and fluent English speakers. Prior teaching or leadership is helpful but not required.

The program involves a great deal of teamwork. Flexibility, team-spirit and dedication to global service are musts!

Volunteer Stories

"I will fondly remember this as one of the most engaging experiences of my life."

Tom Wooten, South Africa volunteer

"Our time in Masiphumelele was amazing!  The learners enriched my soul and mind so much and I will never forget their sparkling eyes and big smiles.  The were so excited to work with us and we saw so much prorgess with their reading and writing.

The best was when we held a certificate and prize celebration... a lot of parents came and it brought so many tears of joy when they sang spiritual songs of thanks for us!  I will never forget that moment for the rest of my life."

Tina Marie Golda, South Africa volunteer
