Designing a WorldTeach Resume

We ask that you design a new resume specifically for this volunteer position. The resume portion of the application is an important factor in making volunteer placements, and will be submitted directly to a foreign government or institution if you are accepted to WorldTeach. A standard resume typically does not contain the necessary information for your overseas placement.  Please email your resume to WorldTeach at admissions@worldteach.org.

Appearance

Your resume should be neat, uncluttered, and easy to read. Avoid abbreviations. Leave spaces between items, and use underlining and boldface type to distinguish individual entries. Give brief, 1-2 line descriptions of jobs. Avoid excessive detail about college coursework or previous jobs unless it is clearly and directly relevant to living and teaching overseas.

Basic Format

Limit your resume to one page; please do not include an objective. Do include the following, with relevant dates:

Name

Provide both given name and nickname if applicable, current and permanent address, phone numbers, and email addresses.

Education

List college or university, year of graduation, degree received. Also list any advanced degrees, certificates or other educational programs completed, and relevant honors or awards received.

Teaching Experience

List any teaching, tutoring, or training experience you have had, formal and informal. Include formal classroom teaching, individual tutoring, teaching assistantships, coaching, employee training positions, etc.

Volunteer or Public Service Experience

List any significant volunteer or public service experience you have had, particularly experiences working with under-served populations. Do not include controversial political or human rights activities, as these may be misinterpreted by officials overseas (Note: Please do list these activities on your WorldTeach Part I application webform).

Overseas Experience

List any significant overseas experience you have had, particularly in developing countries.

Other Professional Experience

List any relevant jobs you have held, particularly office or other professional positions. List both college and post-college positions, if relevant. Do not list jobs such as waiting tables, cashiering, manual jobs, or unskilled jobs, as they are not relevant to teaching overseas and may be misleading to officials reviewing your resume. (Note: Please do list these activities on your WorldTeach Part I application webform).

Other Skills

List any other relevant skills or experience. These include practical skills such as carpentry, agriculture, gardening, or sewing; training or experience in bookkeeping, computers, or personnel management; relevant language skills; and training or skills in childcare, health, or nutrition. Provide details showing your degree of proficiency in the skill, if possible. Do not include skills or courses that are not relevant (i.e. sporting activities, etc.)
