Becoming a WorldTeach Volunteer

Application Process

Welcome to the WorldTeach Application Process!

We have designed our application process to ensure that we are able to offer qualified volunteer teachers to our partner schools, while at the same time placing volunteers where they will best succeed. With these goals in mind, we hope to contribute positively to both international education and the personal experiences of our volunteers. Although we do not have specific professional requirements, we seek applicants who show a commitment to teaching, public service, international development, and intercultural understanding.

Before beginning your application process, please select a program by reading our materials online.  Application material will allow you to apply for a first choice and second choice program.  Please note that due to in-country orientation and academic calendars, our programs have fixed departure and return dates.

There is no application fee.

Application Material

There are two parts to the official WorldTeach application:

  • WorldTeach Application Part I.  This online webform will ask you to specify your program selection and provide basic background information on yourself.  The webform should take approximately ten minutes to fill out.
  •
Within a business day, you should receive an email from us providing you with a password to check the progress of your application online at http://masterchecklist.worldteach.org.  On the webform and all subsequent application materials, please use only your given name.
  • WorldTeach Application Part II.  Subsequently we will request from you:
  1. Three essays which serve as your personal statement

  2. Resume in WorldTeach format

  3. Two references which can be professional or academic

  4. Academic transcripts (ONLY semester and year-long programs)
  1. Interview with returned volunteer (ONLY semester and year-long programs)

As you complete them, you may email materials for Part II directly to admissions@worldteach.org.  If you would prefer to mail your application, please allow an extra 3-4 days as our mail is routed through Harvard University.

Our admissions are rolling, so we urge you to apply immediately, well before the deadline.  Typically, applicants apply 5-6 months prior to departure.  While we encourage you to try to complete your application well in advance, we will not begin review until 8 months prior to a program's departure date.  Applicants for partially- and fully-funded programs are encouraged to apply as early as possible, as these programs fill more quickly.

When programs fill before the final application deadline has passed, we will start a waitlist.  Once a waitlist has been started, you are still welcome to submit an application.  We will only admit candidates from the waitlist if confirmed volunteers withdraw from the program.  The waitlist is ordered, and will be determined by 1) when you submitted your application, 2) the quality of your application and 3) your relevant experience.

Application Decision

Upon completion of your application, the Admissions Committee will begin a comprehensive evaluation. All programs except the fully-funded programs will hear from us regarding a decision within approximately two weeks.  Fully-funded programs should expect a decision notification within approximately a month and a half.

If you are accepted into one of the WorldTeach programs, you will receive a telephone call and an email notification.  Immediately after, you will be sent a WorldTeach Acceptance Packet. This includes all of the necessary materials and directions to officially confirm your place in the WorldTeach program to which you have been accepted.
